Families Supporting Adoption: Foster Care Myth #4

In a series of Wednesday posts, we will debunk some common myths about foster care. We welcome your comments and hope you will share your experiences with us at fsablog@gmail.com.

Myth:?I would have to provide medical insurance for a foster child in my home.

FACT:? You won't be adding a foster child to your health insurance plan. It is NOT the responsibility of the foster family to cover medical costs of the children in their care.?

In some cases, foster children are covered by their birth parents' insurance.?Most children in foster care are eligible for Medicaid and/or other state equivalent coverage (the Oregon Health Plan or Wisconsin's Badgercare+, for example).??Thus, at any medical appointment - doctor, dentist, behavioral, and mental health therapy - the foster parent must bring their foster child?s Medicaid card as well as a Placement Verification Letter, stating that the child is in state custody.?

Some counties even have a public health nurse on staff who will help foster parents find available healthcare providers.?

Many thanks to Mary M. from the UT Layton FSA for her help in addressing this myth.
